What I’d choose again for a heartfelt, unforgettable wedding celebration in Central Illinois.

What I’d choose again for a heartfelt, unforgettable wedding celebration in Central Illinois.

Weddings are a beautiful tapestry of choices—some we might change in hindsight, but others we wouldn’t trade for the world. After reflecting on what I’d do differently in this blog post, I realized there are so many decisions from my own wedding that I would without a doubt make again.

These moments, both big and small, created a day that was deeply personal, meaningful, and rooted in family and community. If I could do it all over, these are the choices I’d keep exactly the same, and I hope they inspire you to think about the traditions and details you’d hold onto, too.

Wearing a Dress Steeped in Family History
100% without a doubt - one thing I’d never change, it’s slipping into the same wedding dress my mother and grandmother wore. Each delicate stitch, every whisper of satin, felt like a tangible link to the women who came before me. Wearing that dress wasn’t just about style; it was about honoring the legacy of love and commitment that shaped my family. The dress carried stories, laughter, and tears from generations past, and on my wedding day, I felt wrapped in their strength and joy. For anyone considering a family heirloom, I can’t recommend it enough—it’s a powerful way to connect your story to those who paved the way.

Involving Family in Every Detail—And Expanding the Circle
One of the most meaningful aspects of my wedding was the way my family’s hands and hearts were woven into every detail. If I could do it again, I’d keep this sense of togetherness, but I’d also widen the circle to include my in-laws more intentionally. Inviting both families to contribute their traditions and talents makes the celebration richer and more inclusive. Whether it’s a special recipe, a reading during the ceremony, or a family heirloom on display, these personal touches create a sense of unity and belonging that money simply can’t buy.

Choosing Locally Sourced Dahlias—And Going All-In on Local Blooms
Flowers have always been at the heart of what I do, and I’m so grateful I chose locally grown dahlias for my bouquet. Their vibrant colors and unique forms reflected the beauty of our own Illinois gardens. If I could do it again, I’d fill my entire bouquet—and all the arrangements—with local flowers, celebrating the bounty of our region. There’s something magical about knowing your wedding flowers were grown just a few miles away, nurtured by hands you know and trust. Plus, supporting local flower farms brings your celebration full circle, rooting your special day in the community you love.

Getting Ready at My Parents’ Home—A Morning Full of Meaning
The quiet hours spent getting ready at my parents’ home remain some of my most treasured memories. The familiar sounds of my dad practicing on his piano, the scent of coffee brewing, the sound of brothers and their families in and out the door —all these little moments grounded me and filled me with calm. Surrounded by family, I felt supported and cherished before stepping into the whirlwind of the day. If you’re considering where to begin your wedding morning, I can’t recommend the comfort of home enough. It’s a gentle, grounding way to start a day that will fly by in a joyful blur.

Capturing Photos in an Old Bookshop—A Nod to Our Story
Our choice to take wedding photos in a quirky old bookshop was a love letter to our own story. It was the very place where our relationship began, and the shelves lined with stories felt like the perfect backdrop for the next chapter of our own. The photos are whimsical, cozy, and utterly unique—just like us. If you have a spot that’s meaningful to your journey as a couple, don’t be afraid to break from tradition and make it part of your day. Those photos will become cherished keepsakes, rich with memories and meaning.

Including My Grandma at the Piano—Music and Memories
One of the most heartwarming moments of my wedding was listening to my grandma play the piano. Seeing her at the piano is a memory I have for so many years growing up and now that she's gone, I am so glad I asked her to be a part of my special day. It binds her to me in so many ways more than we were knit together already. I specifically chose love songs from musicals because she and I had a shared love of the classic romantic movies and had even seen a musical (or two) together in theaters. Whether it’s a musical performance, a reading, or another unique talent, inviting loved ones to participate adds a deeply personal touch that makes your day unforgettable.

The Beauty of Family Involvement—Creating a Day That Feels Like Home
Looking back, what made my wedding day truly magical wasn’t the perfection of the details, but the hands and hearts that shaped them. Family involvement made every element feel authentic, warm, and full of love. If you’re planning your own celebration, I encourage you to invite your loved ones in—let them share their talents, their stories, and their traditions. It’s these connections that transform a wedding from an event into a memory you’ll treasure forever.

Weddings are a reflection of who we are and the people who’ve shaped us. While it’s natural to think about what we might change, it’s just as important to celebrate the choices that made our day uniquely ours. For me, honoring family traditions, choosing local flowers, and weaving in personal touches are decisions I’d joyfully make again.

What about you? What wedding choices would you keep the same? I’d love to hear your stories—share them in the comments or reach out to me at Three Berry Flowers.
